Summary: | In 1990, legislation established a new program for secondary level teachers in Italy. However, the law has still not been fully implemented. The history of language teacher training in Italy is reviewed as a background to discussion of the current situation. Over the years, the Italian system is found to have a tendency to focus on verification & certification rather than on real training. It is argued that universities must take on the training of elementary-level foreign-language teachers as well as secondary-level teachers, as foreign-language instruction in the primary school has become mandatory.
