Abstract We revealed the inherent instability of alpha ''-Fe sub(16)N sub(2) in hydrogenous atmospheres due to the denitrification toward alpha -Fe by forming NH sub(3) at the particle surface. Coating the particle surface with SiO sub(2) to suppress the formation of NH sub(3) has proven to be a simple yet powerful method to enhance the stability of alpha ''-Fe sub(16)N sub(2) in hydrogenous atmospheres.
