Abstract Andrea Appiani (1759-1817), most famous for his work as court painter to Napolean in 1805, also operated as an art thief and a museum founder and patron. He actively participated in the requisitioning of Italian works for the Musée Central des Arts (known today as the Louvre). Most significantly, Appiani was responsible for the 1802 acquisition of many works from Milan's Pinacoteca di Brera. Through the analysis of previously unpublished documents, this article examines Appiani's activities in the employ of the French emperor. [Revised Publication Abstract]
