Preliminary Study on Mutagenic Effect of EMS on Tbberose (Polianthes tuberosea L.)

The present investigation was laid out to study the effect of EMS in inducing mutation on 3 prominent tuberose cultivars like Calcutta double (V sub(1)), Prajwal (V sub(2)) and Shringar (V sub(3)). Bulbs of the 3 tuberose cultivars were treated with 0.25%, 0.5% and 1%(v/v) EMS concentration and 20 b...

Abstract The present investigation was laid out to study the effect of EMS in inducing mutation on 3 prominent tuberose cultivars like Calcutta double (V sub(1)), Prajwal (V sub(2)) and Shringar (V sub(3)). Bulbs of the 3 tuberose cultivars were treated with 0.25%, 0.5% and 1%(v/v) EMS concentration and 20 bulbs from each treatment including untreated control were planted in RBD involving 3 replications during year 2011-12. In general there was significant reduction observed for sprouting of bulbs, leaf area, spike height and diameter, flower size, number of flower per inflorescence and flower fresh weight in all cultivars treated with higher dose (1 %) of EMS as compared to untreated control. However number of leaves was increased significantly in most of the EMS treatment and maximum number of leaves (36.83 in V sub(1), 36.73 in V sub(2) and 44 in V sub(3)) were found in 0.5% treatment as compare to their respective control (26.28 in V sub(1), 23.33 in V sub(2) and 41.28 in V sub(3)). Minimum sprouting (88% in V sub(1), 93% in V sub(2) and 93% in V sub(3)) was noticed with higher dose (1 %) treatment. Pollen sterility also increases with increasing dose of EMS in both Prajwal and Shringar. Among the cultivars Calcutta double appeared to be more sensitive to EMS as compared to Prajwal and Shringar.
