Abstract Ventilation is continuous in the lugworm, Abarenicola affinis , when worms are placed in plastic burrows in constant darkness and ventilation flow, V super(.) sub(w), is measured with a thermistor device. Incurrent burrow water pH, pO sub(2) and temperatures were recorded from natural burrows seasonally and throughout a tidal cycle. The physico-chemical microenvironment appeared stable relative to conditions outside the burrow. Vu. sub(w) is insensitive to temperature from 10 to 25 degree C with Q sub(10) approximately equals 1. V super(.) sub(w) is also insensitive to pH and CO sub(w) but is linearly dependent upon pO sub(2). O sub(2) extraction is essentially insensitive to temperature between 10 and 20 C degree .
