Abstract The Na super(+),K super(+)-activated adenosine triphosphatase (EC 3.6.1.3) localized in animal cell membranes represents a universal system for the active transport of Na super(+) and K super(+). In order to elucidate the molecular mechanism of the active cation transport we have analysed the structural organization of the enzyme from several species. The complete nucleotide sequences of cDNA clones corresponding to the coding regions of appropriate mRNAs were determined, and the primary structure of the alpha - and beta -subunits of the pig kidney Na super(+),K super(+)-ATPase could then be deduced (1-3).
