Abstract Integrated anaerobic digestion (IAD) moves beyond the primary gas production of traditional anaerobic digestion to include the conversion of digested residuals to value-added products. This newly developing technology must overcome the barriers of complexity, technological immaturity, poor economies of scale, market development, and the lack of experienced project developers. These challenges can be met through maximizing on-site feedstocks, using appropriate technology and selecting partnerships for maturity and strength, constructing larger projects that are replicable, performing intensive market analysis and creating product branding, and constructing a team with diverse experience.
