Abstract The rates of sulphate reduction and sulphite production in the top 3 cm of freshwater sediment were measured simultaneously using indirect photometric chromatography and a radiotracer technique involving microdistillation. The turnover rate constants and sulphate pool sizes were assessed at different sediment depths. Turnover rates were compared with those calculated from a mathematical model involving vertical sulphate gradients as a function of diffusion, bacterial reduction and sedimentation.
