Abstract | On the occasion of the 72nd Whitney Biennial held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (2004), discusses the resurgence of painting and drawing in contemporary art. The author compares the 2004 Biennial with previous ones, studies the curators' preference for paintings, and notes that the pictorial trend has been prominent since the turn of the 21st century, making reference to work by Cecily Brown which features in the exhibition. She considers work by established artists on show in the Biennial, namely Marina Abramovic, Yayoi Kusama, and Paul McCarthy, notes drawings by Robert Longo in the exhibition, and outlines the positive reaction of the public to the Biennial. She describes the viewer-friendly arrangement of work in the Museum, considers the dominance of drawings, etchings, and graphic works, and studies work by the Brazilian artist Assume Vivid Astro Focus, with reference to the performance Garden 10 (illus.). She notes Kusama's installation Fireflies on the Water, and concludes by commenting on the importance of the interaction between art works and the public for the future of art. |
