Abstract | Prior studies demonstrated that revision of THA for instability is more common in younger patients than older patients.9 As the number of TH As per- formed on younger patients continues to increase, the revision burden due to instability will grow, necessitating improved understanding of prosthetic design and its influence on dislocation rate and long-term performance.10 In the past, the orthopedic community feared that excessive polyethylene wear in DM articulations would lead to intraprosthetic dislocations, and this caused surgeons to hesitantly use DM implants in younger patients.1112 However, newer generations of DM articulations experience reduced wear rates and, thus, have made DM implants more resilient and appealing for younger patients.1315 Given this, the purpose of this study was to compare the clinical outcomes of DM implants with FB implants in patients younger than 55 years undergoing primary THA. Methods The present study examined all patients between 18 and 55 years old who underwent primary THA with FB or DM articulations between June 2011 and July 2021 at a single urban institution, which comprises a large academic medical center and a tertiary orthopedic specialty hospital. Patient records and data were deidentified as part of our institutional quality improvement program; however, human-subjects review by our Institutional Review Board was obtained prior to this study. Data Collection Patient demographic data including age, sex, race, body mass index (BMI; kg/m2), smoking status, American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) classification, and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) were collected. |
