Abstract This action research project compared the effects of three different types of thermotherapy on hip flexion passive range of motion (PROM): moist hot pack, warm whirlpool, and active exercise. A total of 62 subjects between the ages of 18 and 23 were recruited from a Division III university in Northwest Iowa. Each of the 44 subjects who were eligible for this study received all three methods of thermotherapy on separate, nonconsecutive days. Hip flexion PROM was measured before and after each treatment session. Once data were gathered, a multivariate ANOVA with a Bonferroni post hoc test was run. The finding of this study revealed active exercise thermotherapy treatments yielded greater increases in hip flexion PROM than both moist hot pack and warm whirlpool treatments. The results obtained in this study provide valuable information for Athletic Trainers, Physical and Occupational Therapists, and any other professionals who instructs an athletic population.
