Abstract Nurse dissatisfaction and decision to leave an organization has been a frequently studied phenomenon, as nursing is an occupation with an identified turnover rate as high as 50 percent. Many studies have identified external factors of the job which may affect the level of perceived satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship that the perceptions of staff nurse verbal interaction style may have with stress, social support, job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Ninety-eight Intensive Care and Medical-Surgical nurses from five hospital sites comprised the sample. The two nursing groups were studied, as previous research has found differences between these groups on the variable of stress. This design would allow further exploration of similarities and differences between these two nursing groups. Instrumentation included the Amidon Control Orientation Questionnaire to measure perceptions of staff nurse verbal interaction style. The Job Related Tension Index was used to measure stress. Caplan's People Around Us measured social support. The Index of Work Satisfaction was used to measure job satisfaction. The Organizational Commitment Questionnaire measured commitment to the job. Correlation with the variables for the total sample and the two subsamples of Intensive Care and Medical-Surgical nurses did not find significant relationships between perceptions of verbal interaction style and any of the other study variables. However, there were significant correlation with other study variables. Increased job stress was related to decreased levels of job satisfaction. Increased levels of job satisfaction were associated with increased levels of perceived social support and organizational commitment. Decreased levels of social support were associated with increased levels of stress. Weak but significant associations were found between stress and organizational commitment for the total sample and for the Intensive Care nurses. Increased levels of stress were associated with decreased levels of organizational commitment. To further determine the similarities and differences between the Intensive Care and Medical-Surgical participants, t-tests were performed. The only significant difference between the two groups was on the variable of social support. Medical-Surgical nurses perceived higher levels of social support than did Intensive Care nurses.
