Summary:Introduction: This randomised clinical trial investigates the effects of play therapy among institutionalised Chinese elderly with behavioural problems. Methods: 12 subjects living in an elderly home were randomised to a play therapy group or a conventional cognitive training (control) group to receive three 1-hour sessions of play therapy or conventional cognitive training each week for 8 weeks, respectively. Outcome measures were mini mental state examination and Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI) scores at the baseline and weeks 8 and 16. Results: Group by time interaction was found in CMAI score. Improvement of the CMAI score was greater at week 8 in the play therapy group than the control group (p<0.01), but the greater improvement was not maintained at week 16. Conclusion: Play therapy may better reduce behavioural issues among institutionalised Chinese elderly with behavioural problems than conventional cognitive training.
