Abstract In order to control the production of highly toxic iodide disinfection by-products during disinfection/oxidation process of iodide in raw water,transformation of iodide,generation of free radicals and reaction conditions were analyzed in thermoactivated persulfate system through batch experiment. The results showed that the thermoactivated persulfate oxidation system could effectively promote the conversion of iodide into iodate which was nontoxic and harmless to human body. It was a two-step reaction that iodide was firstly converted to intermediate( HIO),and then it was further oxidized to iodate. The conversion rate of iodide under acidic conditions was higher than that under neutral and alkaline conditions,and the conversion rate increased with the increase of persulfate concentration and temperature. Free radicals quenching experiment verified that the conversion of iodide to iodate was attributed to the interaction results of sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals in the thermoactivated persulfate oxida
