Abstract Talaga lake is a lake that is directly related to the sea through rivers along ~c1 km. The lake is intensively used by the local community for their daily activities causing pollution which can degrade the quality of the waters. The study of community structure is a concept that is studying the species composition and abundance, in this case the phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are drift planktonic plants and able to photosynthesize. The ability of phytoplankton to photosynthesize and produce organic compounds makes phytoplankton known as primary producers. The study was conducted in March, May, July and October 2013 in the 9 (nine) sampling points. The parameters used are the main parameters of the composition and abundance of phytoplankton and supporting parameters physico-chemical of waters: pH, turbidity, conductivity, temperature, brightness, DO, and nutrients. Observations obtained 39 genus of phytoplankton which is phylum of Chrysophyta (14 genus), Chlorophyta (18 genus), Cyanophyta (5 genus,) and Dinophyta (2 genus). Abundance of phytoplankton in Talaga lake during the observation range between 5.3 x 103-8.9 x 105 cells/l, with the highest peak of phytoplankton abundance in May. The value of diversity index (H ') in Talaga Lake during the observation ranged from 0.91 to 2.21, indicating that conditions of phytoplankton community in Talaga Lake be on moderate community or water quality being moderately polluted. Saprobic coefficient value of Talaga Lake is 0.46, this shows that the waters in the phase ~b /~a? mesosaphrobic, being moderately polluted.
