Summary:The leader of the orchestra Simon Standage, who brought his long-established Salomon Quartet to the festival for one concert, also formed a quartet of string section leaders from the orchestra and they played with the confidence of a fully established quartet. The admirably sturdy performance of Haydn's famous 'Emperor' Quartet was pleasing but choice of repeats was open to question - notably so in the first movement, where the da capo of the long final section was made but the first-time through was not performed, meaning that Haydn's requirement that the coda should be played faster on its second appearance was lost. The remaining quartet concert was at the small church at Acton Round, a venue so popular that audience numbers have to be limited.
