The Niquel do Vermelho project concept was developed considering its insertion into CVRD Non Ferrous Division operating assets and its integration with current and future copper operations within the Carajas Region. The Niquel do Vermelho Project is located in the Carajas Mineral Province, approximately 70 km from Carajas Iron Ore Mine, in the State of Para, Brazil. The Project is approximately 10 km from the Sossego Copper Project and is linked by paved road to the cities of Canaa dos Carajas (6 km) and Parauapebas (60 km). The project was managed using an approach that combined two main methodology -- process economics -- developed by CVRD and detailed elsewhere and the theory of constraints (TOC) or critical chain methodology by Eliyahu Goldratt, that resulted in an early development of the activities for the study conclusion. For Niquel do Vermelho Project the consumption of the project buffer was only 10% allowing the project conclusion two months before the final date agreed with the board of the company.
