Abstract Older people, although preserving all their rights, have to deal with obstacles caused by their status and a lesser social integration. Because an institutional framework to protect such age group is missing, the Mexico City Government has enacted several laws that constitute a remarkable advancement in this regard. This legal framework both anticipates the increasing elderly population in Mexico City and supports programs and activities that are being undertaken by the Ministry of Social Development of the Mexico City Government, through the Institute for the Care of Older Adults in Mexico City. Both programs and activities are aimed at promoting social inclusion, as well as improving the welfare of the elderly.
