In their transition from education to career, pupils with special needs face more obstacles than their peers. Therefore, vocational/career guidance is even more important for their lifelong vocational integration. The study including counselling services of primary and secondary schools in Slovenia tried to find out which factors played the most important part in the career decisions of persons with special needs. The results showed a shift in thinking that career decisions of pupils with special needs should be based on their specific personality traits - strengths. Therefore, we should establish a new model of vocational/career guidance for persons with special needs, based primarily on their specific strengths, and in this way help them to achieve a competitive career. This in turn requires trained career counsellors and adequate career education that will ena- ble pupils with special needs to acquire the necessary skills in a continuous manner from kindergarten through primary and secondary schools for autonomous decision-making at many career intersections and life transitions, such as employment, education, training, schooling etc...
