Abstract Rechargeable Li–O2 and Li–air batteries require electrode and electrolyte materials that synergistically promote long-term cell operation. In this study, we investigate the role of noble metals Pt and Pd as catalysts in the Li–O2 oxidation process and their compatibility with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) based electrolytes. Here, we identify a basis for low potential Li2O2 evolution followed by oxidative decomposition of the electrolyte to form carbonate side products.
