한국 팩트체크 저널리즘의 특징: 팩트체크 언론인들의 사실 인식과 사실 검증과정 탐색을 중심으로

이 연구는 최근 한국 언론계에 새로운 흐름으로 대두된 팩트체크 저널리즘의 성격을 팩 트체크를 수행하는 언론인들의 사실 인식과 사실 검증 과정에 대한 탐색을 중심으로 살 펴본 것이다. 이를 위해 팩트체크 저널리즘을 1년 이상 수행한 기자 10명을 심층 인터뷰 했다. 연구결과, 팩트체크 언론인들은 팩트체크 저널리즘이 추구하는 사실이 기존의 발 표기사, 발생기사가 다루는 사실과는 다른 층위의 사실이며 현재의 뉴스 생산 환경에서 는 이중 층위의 사실이 뉴스룸 안에서의 역할분담을 통해 동시에 추구될 수밖에 없다고 인식하고 있었다. 팩트체크 언론인들은 객관성을 추구하지만, 검증대상을 선정할 때 소 속사나 기자 개인이 갖고 있는 편향성으로부터 자유로울 수 없다고 진술했다. 팩트체크 기사의 서술양식으로는 기존의 역피라미드 구조와는 달리 기승전결의 맥락을 가진 해 설형 기사가 채택되고 있었다. 마지막으로 팩트체크 언론인들은 팩트체크 저널리즘이 언론 상호간의 교차검증을 가능하게 함으로써 긍정적인 상호 견제 효과를 낳을 것이라 고 전망했다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 팩트체크 저널리즘이 한국 언론의 관행에 제기하는 함의를 검토했다. The purpose of this study is to explore the nature of fact check journalism, a rising trend in the Korean news industry, with a focus on investigating fact check journalists’ perception of facts and the processes they use to verify facts. The in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 journalists who have experienced fact-checking for at least one year. This study found that fact check journalists perceive the “facts” that fact-checking journalism aspires to obtain as belonging to a different level from the facts that conventional event centered reporting provides. The fact check journalists insisted that in the current news production environment, journalists ought to simultaneously provide both levels of facts by distributing roles within the newsroom. While fact check journalists aimed to maintain objectivity, they stated that, when selecting items that they will fact check against, they are not free from their personal biases or their company’s policies. With regard to the form of fact-checking articles, many fact check journalists chose the interpretive style that provides the conclusion at the end, instead of the conventional inverted pyramid style. Lastly, fact check journalists predicted that fact check journalism will create a positive effect of checks-and-balances among news outlets by enabling cross verifications of news articles. Based on the results, the implications of fact check journalism against the conventions of the Korean news industry were discussed. KCI Citation Count: 2
