Abstract | In January 2006, after months of rumors, corrections, accusations, and investigations, the editors ofScienceretracted two papers reporting on embryonic stem-cell research.* The work of the celebrity scientist Hwang Woo Suk had promised to revolutionize the study of stem cells by removing the need to destroy embryos to develop them. Through Hwang’s methods, stem cells could be cloned from a patient’s own cells. Unfortunately, Hwang’s claims were based on fraudulent data presented in fabricated images.
