Design of a Fixed Aperture 2D Sparse Radar Array

We present a methodology for the optimization of planar SIMO arrays limited by fixed apertures and levels of sparsity. The aim is to optimize the ambiguity function of the array on a uniform λ/2-grid in means of sidelobe level (SLL), whilst maintaining main-lobe widths comparable to the full array c...

Abstract We present a methodology for the optimization of planar SIMO arrays limited by fixed apertures and levels of sparsity. The aim is to optimize the ambiguity function of the array on a uniform λ/2-grid in means of sidelobe level (SLL), whilst maintaining main-lobe widths comparable to the full array configuration. Optimization within the given constraints is performed via a simulated annealing based algorithm. We compare achievable maximal SLL of arrays of varying sparsity but same aperture size. Applying compressive sensing algorithms for reconstruction, we further evaluate their respective performance in terms of resolution in simulated target scenario snapshots.
