Abstract | Reconstructing missing receptacles is a daily exercise for archaeo-anthropologists working on ancient funeral sites. For historical periods, solid containers are most often in the form of coffins or coffers indicated either directly by nails, wood or traces of wood, or indirectly by the body position, constraint effects or the area of decomposition. However, there are few large series that combine both well-preserved receptacles and systematic taphonomical recording. Recent excavations of the Saint-Jacques cemeteries at La Ciotat and Les Crottes in Marseille have produced 1 044 coffin burials ranging over time from the late 16th to the early 20th centuries. Systematic recording of the often well-preserved wooden containers and buried subjects has made it possible to assess how they have interacted and to enrich the analytical matrices used to reconstruct these perishable items. Over and above reconstruction as such, the aim here is to propose, starting from a coherent and documented corpus, an analysis of the impact of these containers on the position and decomposition of buried subjects, taking into account their specific degradation processes.
