Abstract Generational succession in family farming is the formation and permanence process of new generations of farmers. Thus, considering that the reproduction of family farming depends on how the succession process will be, there must be an interest in remaining in the countryside, continuing small-scale farming. The objective of this research is to identify, in an unprecedented way, in the territory of the Middle Jequitinhonha River, if the children of family farmers intend, or not, to succeed their parents in command of family properties and in control of production. To achieve the proposed objective, a quantitative, descriptive, field research was carried out and with the application of questionnaires to students of the Agroecological Family School in the municipality of Aracuai and to the students of the Agricultural Family School of Jacare, located in the city of Itinga, located in the territory of the middle Jequitinhonha river. For young people, the decision to leave the field is always difficult, as it implies moving away from family members, the community and all the knowledge that has been passed on to them. As a result, it was noted that young people from the Middle Jequitinhonha suffer from a central dilemma: either they withdraw from the territory to carry out their university study pretensions, tensioning the debate on rural succession; or they stay and take over the jobs, giving continuity to family farming. In other words, the problem of rural succession is very much alive in the rural area of the territory of the Middle Jequitinhonha River.
