Summary:A brief report highlights a novel approach taken by 3rd and 4th graders at an elementary school in New Hampshire to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the National School Lunch Program. Special menus and activities were arranged to capture the flavor of 3 decades of school lunch history, covering the 1940s, the 1960s, and the 1980s, with each of 3 shifts of students passing through the lunch line served a distinct menu characteristic of 1 of these 3 decades. Emphasis also was placed on nutrition education in the lunchroom, the use of nutrition materials by teachers, and the close of festivities with a special cake iced with the words "40 Years of School Lunch."
