Abstract Fusarium solani was capable of causing typical canker in sugar maple only when inoculations were made when the cambium of the suscept was not active. Inoculations with several other fungi including Botryosphaeria ribis and Fusarium roseum failed to result in cankers. Fusarium solani was isolated from cankers that developed around several check wounds and nails that had been driven into the trees for the purpose of tagging. The results agree with earlier data regarding the time of year that cankers are initiated.
