Summary:A technical overview is presented on the physiology of human digestive processes for carbohydrates at various age levels, and of various disorders involving these processes. Specific attention is focused on: (1) enzymatically-controlled carbohydrate metabolism processes in the mouth and in the intestinal tract; and (2) adaptive responses to ingested carbohydrates in infants. Intestinal digestion is discussed relative to various specific enzyme systems, viz.: sucrase-isomaltase, maltase-glucoamylase, and lactase. Monosaccharide uptake and transport also are discussed.(wz).
