Abstract | The work analyses the changing scope, structure and performance of Czech agriculture within the transition period, when there is a substantial reduction in the number of labour force, changes in production structure, and a decrease in numbers of animals, especially cattle. With a decline in agricultural production and market supply with agricultural products, the consumption of material inputs reduces. The growth of labour productivity was faster than in other industries of Czech economy. Despite this fact a disparity in income between agriculture and other industries is deepening.. At the same time there has been a significant fall in investments as well as in a volume of production essentials, particularly stocks. There have been important positive changes to the restoration of property rights. In spite of relatively fast adaptation the economic position of agriculture has deteriorated. The presented processes have resulted in a change to the macroeconomic position of agriculture. The share of agriculture in gross domestic product, labour force and investments as well as in trade with agricultural and food commodities has reduced. On the other hand, the extraproduction function of agriculture is of growing importance. This social interest must be taken into account by the Czech government when drafting the agricultural policy of the country. For the further development of Czech agriculture, the accession to the EU and an impact of the continuing liberalization of world agricultural markets are important in particular. |
