Summary: | Emergent aquatic weeds constitute a serious problem to the flow of water along the irrigation canals system. Two experiments, at Elkeraba drain and Wad Hussein canal in the Gezira scheme, were conducted in October 2002 to evaluate the efficacy of Tender, Glyphonil and Herphosate in comparison with Roundup as standard on emergent aquatic weeds. Each experimental site was divided into sub-plots with buffer area (10x5m each) and arranged in a randomized complete block design with 3 replicates. In each experiment Tender, Glyphonil, Herphosate and Roundup, each at 1.5 kg a.i./fed were applied at a vol. rate of 126L/fed. Treatments effects were assessed monthly by visual observations for 6 months. Emergent and banks weeds were most sensitive to herbicides. Submerged weeds were not affected. All productd had excellent control (83-99 ;) within 60-120 days after application in both sites and good control (70-83;) at 150 days after application. Moderate control (58-70;) in both sites was observed after 180 days. Decline in acticity of all herbicides tested, after 150 days, was evident by the moderate and slight regrowth of broadleaved and grassy weeds respectively. The Pests and Diseases Committee recommended the following herbicides for pre-emergenc weed control: 1- Tender 48; SL at 4.2 L/fed (1.512 g.a.i./fed), 2- Glyphonil 48; SL at 4.2 L/fed (1.512g a.i./fed), 3- Herphosate 48; SL at 4.2 L/fed (1.512g a.i./fed) |
