This is why winterhardiness is of primary importance to allow survival of autumn-sown crops followed by a targeted maturity to avoid late occurring frosts during anthesis while providing early physiological maturity to avoid hot, dry desiccating summer conditions. National breeding programs in Turkey, the Commonwealth of Independent States (former Soviet Union) and the Balkan countries are briefly discussed |
