Summary:This paper outlines a comparison of investment under open and restricted access to livestock grazing. A survey of small stockowners on open access and communal grazing in three agricultural districts of the Limpopo province of South Africa was conducted during 2007 to investigate this relationship. Out of a sample of 134 stockowners, 87 (65%) operated on open access, while 47 (35%) were on restricted (communal) grazing. Results from probit analysis indicate that investment in on-farm improvements like, fencing, watering points, pasture improvement, herd quality and grazing (veld) condition is higher where there is restricted (communal) grazing compared to open access with no restriction. It is concluded that investment under restricted access grazing is likely but not sufficient for on-farm investment. Recommendations give due consideration to restricted access to grazing with access to credit facilities and appropriate extension services for on-farm investment.
