Abstract The investigation to determine the effect of different nitrogen rates on growth and yield performance of two wheat cultivars viz. Iqbal-2000 and Chenab-2000 was carried out at the Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. The nitrogen treatments were control, 60, 120 and 180 kg N ha-1. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications placing the cultivars and nitrogen rates in the plain and sub- plots respectively. The net plot size was 1.5m x 5m. The crop was sown on November 10, 2000 and harvested on May 2, 2001. All other Agronomic operation were kept normal and uniform for all the treatments. Data on different growth and yield characteristics of the crop were collected and analyzed statistically. The results obtained are summarized as follows. The yield and yield components of wheat were affected significantly by different nitrogen levels. The cultivar Chenab-2000 performed better in fertile tillers, 1000-grain weight and grain yield than cultivar Iqbal-2000 at nitrogen level 120 kg N ha-1. Germination was not affected significantly by nitrogen levels. This is supported by the hypothesis that seeds do not require any external nutrition for germination process. Plant height (cm), total number of tillers (m-2), number of fertile tillers (m-2), spike length (cm), number of spikelet per spike, number of grains per spike, 1000-grain weight, biological yield, grain and straw yield and harvest index were significantly affected by different nitrogen levels. In treatment N2 (120 kg N ha] the more grain yield may be due to appropriate availability of plant food nutrients, which are favorable to increase in number of fertile tillers (m-2), number of grain per spike and 1000-grain weight. It play be concluded that Chenab-2000 when treated with nitrogen level 120 kg N ha-1 produced the maximum grain yield under agro-ecological conditions prevailing at Faisalabad.
