Abstract An experiment was conducted to determine the performance of introduced banana cultivars under local growing conditions from October 2002 to December 2004 at the IPB Experimental Farm in Bay, Laguna. Nineteen introduced hybrids and landraces were planted together with 8 local cultivars to determine their agronomic and yield performance. Significant differences were observed among cultivars in pseudostem, flowering, harvesting, and yield characteristics. Among the introduced cultivars, FHIA 17, FHIA 23 and SH 3436-9 proved to be superior cultivars since they produced heavy bunches (22 kg per bunch) and heavy individual fingers. However, their TSS is lower than the local cultivars. The increased yield of the first ratoon crops of all introduced cultivars indicate that they possess resistance to common pests and diseases.
