Abstract Peat swamp forests are highly significant globally, both for their diverse and threatened species and as representative unique ecosystems. Apart from its critical role in providing habitat for wildlife, the tropical peat swamp forest also acts as gene bank that harbours potentially useful varieties of plant species. Malaysia`s peat swamp forest resources in the state, the Pahang Forestry Department in collaboration with the United Nation Development Programme/Global Environment Facility (UNDP/GEF) and Danida undertakes a project focusing on the South East Pahang Peat Swamp Forest (SEPPSF). The Danida component focuses on the hydrological and timber assessment aspects of the peat swamp forest, where as the UNDP/GEF component give emphasises on the biological diversity and socio-economic aspects of the peat swamp forest. The final output from the collaborative efforts will be used by the state authority, in particular the Pahang Forestry Department as a guide to manage the remaining peat swamp forest resources. This paper briefly highlighted and discussed the progress and some of the major outputs and findings of the project.
