Abstract Two methods of processing oil palm trunk (OPT) were investigated, namely the conventional method and the potential method. In the conventional method, the palm trees were push-felled by an excavator, and sawn into 2 m billets, starting at 2 m from the base. The billets were processed by gangsaw, table resaw and flaked by a Pallman flaker. It was found that the cost of production of OPT flakes was 73.98 dollar/tonne or 0.25 dollar/kg dry matter (DM). In the potential method, the palm trees were push-felled and shredded by an excavator. The shredded OPT was chipped by a portable Junkkari chipper into a form suitable for ruminant feed. It was found that cost of production OPT chips was 59.04 dollar/tonne or 0.20 dollar/kg DM. The processing capacity was 1.0 tonne/hour for the conventional method and 1.17 tonnes/hour for the potential method.
