Abstract In Molise region, production and marketing of quality wines is rather recent and during the last 20 years 3 CDO and 2 TGI were authorized. In the year 2000, the Molise produced 310,000 hl of wine, commercialised prevalently in bulk, while the CDO wines accounted just for 10% of the whole regional wine production. In this article, the situation of the grape-growing and wine-production in Molise region is exemplified by using historical news, statistical data, and the results of an in-depth chemical-analytical characterization of quality red wines, that are purchased on local market. As regards some analytical parameters, the analysed red wines presented homogeneous characteristics and they could be describes as: wines with low acidity, alcoholic, with a correct relationship between hard and soft components, with a correct structure and a good colour. The quality standards reached by these wines confirm that the production of quality wines in Molise has interesting potential perspectives. With this perspective, the information released in this article contributes to spread and to valorise the enological production of Molise region In Molise la produzione e commercializzazione di vini di qualità è piuttosto recente e si è concretizzata, negli ultimi 20 anni, nella istituzione di 3 DOC e 2 IGT. Nel 2000, il Molise ha prodotto 310.000 hl di vino, commercializzato prevalentemente sfuso, mentre i vini DOC hanno rappresentato appena il 10% dell´intera produzione regionale di vino. In questo articolo viene presentata la realtà viti-vinicola molisana utilizzando notizie storiche, dati statistici e risultati di un´approfondita caratterizzazione chimico-analitica condotta su vini rossi di qualità acquistati sul mercato locale. I vini rossi, analizzati riguardo ad alcuni parametri analitici, presentavano caratteristiche piuttosto omogenee e potevano essere così descritti: vini non particolarmente acidi, con un giusto rapporto tra componenti dure e morbide, alcolici, dotati del giusto corpo, di buon colore. Gli standard di qualità raggiunti dalle produzioni enologiche dimostrano che per i vini di qualità in Molise ci sono interessanti prospettive di crescita.
