Abstract Combining ability of bulu and cere rice varieties was evaluated during May 1991-July 1992 at the Muara Experiment Farm, Bogor Research Institute for Food Crops. Partial diallel crosses involving four bulu and five cere rice varieties were grown in a randomized block design with three replications. Variety IR36 was the best general combiner for ear-bearing tillers and yield, and IR64 for height, days to 80 percent heading and maturity, and unfilled grain percentage. Rojolele a bulu variety was the best general combiner for panicle length, while Ase Lapan for total spikelets per panicle. Barunum/Walanae, IR64/Barunum, IR36/IR64, IR48/Barunum, IR36/Walanae were the best cross combinations for yield in cere varieties. Cross combinations of bulu and cere varieties and especially between bulu varieties had high unfilled grain percentage that generally caused low yield Penelitian daya gabung dari varietas padi bulu dan cere dilakukan di kebun percobaan Muara dan laboratorium Genetika dan Pemuliaan, Balai Penelitian Tanaman Pangan Bogor pada bulan Mei 1991 - Juli 1992. Empat varietas padi bulu dan lima varietas padi cere digunakan sebagai tetua dan disilangkan setengah dialel. Seluruh tetua dan kombinasi persilangan ditanam dalam rancangan acak kelompok dengan tiga ulangan. Varietas IR36 merupakan penggabung umum terbaik untuk jumlah anakan produktif dan hasil dan IR64 untuk sifat tinggi tanaman, umur berbunga 80 persen, umur panen dan persentase kehampaan. Varietas padi bulu Rojolele merupakan penggabung umum yang baik untuk sifat panjang malai, dan Ase Lapan untuk sifat jumlah butir tiap malai. Persilangan antar varietas padi cere Barumun/Walanae, IR64/Barumun, IR36/IR64, IR48/Walanae, dan IR36/Walanae merupakan kombinasi yang baik untuk hasil.
