| Abstract | Intended to serve as an introduction to online searching in the Chicago area, the guide answers these basic questions for those considering going online for the first time: what is online searching, starting out online, local training for online searching, how to choose a terminal, 1200 baud equipment selection, how to prepare for and evaluate a search, patent searching, and how to choose database guides and thesauri. Included are a guide to the literature; the results of a survey of Chicago online users, detailing their experiences and recommendations on training, equipment, and search aids; and a directory of experienced searchers to contact locally for help.
