Abstract | An active matrix type liquid crystal display device capable of accomplishing an angle of visual field equal to that of a CRT and controlling the display by an electric field substantially parallel to a substrate surface provides bright display and requires lower power consumption. Pixel electrodes and opposed electrode capable of applying an electric field substantially parallel to a substrate surface is constituted, the pixel electrodes or the opposed electrodes are constituted by transparent electrodes, and the orientation state of a liquid crystal and the axis of polarization of a polarizer are constituted so that dark display is effected at the time when no field is applied. In this way, there can be provided a transverse field system active matrix type liquid crystal display device having a wide visual field angle characteristics, excellent contrast ratio and aperture ratio and capable of improving maximum transmissivity.
Visuel à cristaux liquides de type à matrice active pouvant donner un angle de champ visuel égal à celui d'un tube cathodique et permettant un contrôle par champ électrique sensiblement parallèle à une surface de substrat, à affichage clair et à faible consommation d'énergie. Des électrodes à pixels et des électrodes opposées permettent d'appliquer un champ électrique sensiblement parallèle à une surface de substrat, les électrodes à pixels ou les électrodes opposées étant transparentes. On établit l'état d'orientation d'un cristal liquide et l'axe de polarisation de polariseur de sorte que l'affichage sombre intervienne lorsqu'aucun champ n'est appliqué. On peut ainsi avoir un visuel à cristaux liquides de type à matrice active à système de champ transversal électrique caractérisé par un large angle du champ visuel, un constraste et un rapport d'ouverture excellents, et un potentiel d'amélioration de la transmissivité maximum. |
