Abstract A magneto-optical recording medium characterized in that a magneto-optical recording layer (6), an intermediate layer (7) comprising a magnetic thin film whose optical reflection factor is 50 % or more, and an auxiliary layer (8) which has a lower coercive force in comparison with the recording layer at a room temperature and has the Curie point higher than that of the recording layer and which is vertically magnetized are formed in this order on a substrate (4, 15). The size of an initializing magnet can be reduced, and a stable recording can be realized.
