Alcohols are recovered from aqueous acid solution by permeation of the alcohol through a perfluorinated ionomer membrane. An improved process for the manufacture of alcohols by acid absorption of olefins is also disclosed, the improvements residing in the use of a perfluorinated ionomer membrane to selectively permeate alcohols from the concentrated aqueous strong acid solution thereof co-produced in their synthesis from olefins. Selon le procédé de cette invention, des alcools sont récupérés à partir d'une solution acide aqueuse par perméation de l'alcool au travers d'une membrane ionomère perfluorée. Un procédé amélioré de production d'alcool par absorption acide d'oléfines est également décrit. L'amélioration consiste à utiliser une membrane ionomère perfluorée pour effectuer la perméation sélective d'alcools à partir de leur solution d'acide fort aqueuse concentrée produite en coopération dans leur synthèse à partir d'oléfines.
