A process is provided for production of a mesophase material that is capable of producing high performance carbon fibers. The mesophase is produced after heavy hydrocarbons have been treated to remove impurities by hydrotreating or quinoline solvent, followed by use of a toluene solvent to remove light hydrocarbons and then being upgraded by a soaker visbreaking step to produce a desirable amount of mesophase material while preventing formation of coke. L'invention concerne un procédé de production d'un matériau en mésophase qui peut produire des fibres de carbone à haute performance. La mésophase est produite après que des hydrocarbures lourds ont été traités pour éliminer les impuretés par hydrotraitement ou par un solvant de quinoléine, suivi de l'utilisation d'un solvant de toluène pour éliminer les hydrocarbures légers et étant ensuite valorisée par une étape de viscoréduction par trempage pour produire une quantité souhaitable de matériau en mésophase tout en empêchant la formation de coke.
