A process is disclosed for recovering soft poly(vinyl butyral) from a plasticized poly(vinyl butyral) multilayer sheet comprising stiff poly(vinyl butyral) and soft poly(vinyl butyral). The multilayer sheet, which may be scrap or recycled material, is first converted to a granulate form and then treated with plasticizer. This plasticizer treatment serves to remove the soft poly(vinyl butyral) component from the granulate, but thereby provides a varnish comprising the soft poly(vinyl butyral) mixed with excess plasticizer. This varnish is however highly viscous and thus difficult to handle or mechanically process. The present disclosure provides a solution to this handling problem by the addition of soft poly(vinyl butyral) having a lower concentration of plasticizer to the varnish, until a product is obtained having a sufficiently low concentration of plasticizer to render the product capable of mechanical processing, for example pelletizing. The resulting product can then be utilized to form soft poly(vinyl butyral) sheets, thereby improving the recyclability of scrap multilayer poly(vinyl butyral) materials. La divulgation concerne un procédé de récupération de poly(butyral de vinyle) souple à partir d'une feuille multicouche de poly(butyral de vinyle) plastifiée comprenant du poly(butyral de vinyle) rigide et du poly(butyral de vinyle) souple. La feuille multicouche, qui peut être un déchet ou un matériau recyclé, est d'abord convertie en une forme granulaire puis traitée avec un plastifiant. Ce traitement de plastifiant sert à éliminer le composant de poly(butyral de vinyle) souple du granulat, mais fournit ainsi un vernis comprenant le poly(butyral de vinyle) souple mélangé avec un plastifiant en excès. Ce vernis est cependant très visqueux et donc difficile à manipuler ou à traiter mécaniquement. La présente divulgation fournit une solution à ce problème de manipulation par l'ajout de poly(butyral de vinyle) souple ayant une concentration plus faible de plastifiant au vernis, jusqu'à ce qu'un produit soit obtenu ayant une concentration suffisamment faible de plastifiant pour rendre le produit apte à un traitement mécanique, par exemple une pelletisation. Le produit résultant peut ensuite être utilisé pour former des feuilles de poly(butyral de vinyle) souple, ce qui permet d'améliorer la recyclabilité de matériaux de poly(butyral de vinyle) multicouches de rebut.
