Abstract | Coalescing solvents are among the most important components of water-borne latex paints and are required for deposition of continuous and tough films during the final stages of paint drying. Water-borne latex paints require 1-2 weight percent coalescing solvent which translates to use of about 770 million pounds in the US alone. This work focused on developing novel biobased coalescing solvents for water-borne latex paints to perform equivalent or better while being cost competitive to higher performing petroleum-based coalescing solvents. Formulation testing included minimum film forming temperature (MMFT), scrub resistance, freeze-thaw stability, and gloss. Other properties of the solvent considered were evaporation (leading to VOC content), density, viscosity, color, and hydrolytic stability. Hydrolytic stability is important for the shelf-life performance of the final paint formulation.
Les solvants coalescents figurent parmi les composants les plus importants de peintures aqueuses au latex et sont nécessaires pour le dépôt de films continus et résistants pendant les étapes finales du séchage de la peinture. Les peintures aqueuses au latex nécessitent de 1 à 2 pour cent en poids de solvant coalescent, ce qui se traduit par une utilisation d'environ 770 millions de livres aux États-Unis uniquement. Ces travaux se concentrent sur le développement de nouveaux solvants coalescents biosourcés pour obtenir des peintures aqueuses au latex équivalentes ou meilleures tout en conservant un tarif avantageux par rapport à des solvants coalescents à base de pétrole ayant des performances plus élevées. Les essais de la formulation portaient sur la température minimale de formation de film (MMFT), la résistance au frottement, la stabilité au gel-dégel et le brillant.
