Abstract The present invention provides an optical modulator in which the amount of ripple is reduced. This Mach-Zehnder optical modulator is provided with: a phase modulation unit provided with an optical waveguide (102, 103) having a PN junction structure, and a traveling wave electrode (108); and a dummy phase modulation unit (53) provided with an optical waveguide that has a traveling wave electrode portion formed longer than the phase modulation unit in the optical propagation direction of the phase modulation unit, and the same PN junction structure as the optical waveguide of the phase modulation unit, and is not connected to the optical waveguide of the phase modulation unit.
