Abstract A liquid crystal backlight (10) is provided with: a light source (12) which emits a laser beam; a lens (21), a mirror (13), a rotating polygon mirror (14), a scanning lens (15) and a folding mirror (16), which configure a conversion optical system that converts the laser beam emitted from the light source (12) into a linear beam; and a light guide plate (17) which permits the linear beam to enter the light guide plate and outputs a two-dimensional beam in the horizontal direction.  An output end surface (19) of the light source (12) is arranged on the rear side of the light guide plate (17) such that the surface normal line is in the horizontal direction or in the directions lower than that.  The lens (21), the mirror (13) and the scanning lens (15) are arranged on the rear side of the light guide plate (17) such that all the surface normal lines of the light transmitting surface and the light reflecting surface are in the horizontal direction or in the directions lower than that.
