Abstract Methods and apparatus are provided for controlling the charge on a stream of fluid droplets by minimizing the phase difference between a calibration signal and its detected signature signal. Such control can be accomplished by adjusting a droplet charging means, a droplet generation means, and/or the signals on either. Droplets are generated by a stimulation signal on a droplet generation means and signal-wise charged by a charging signal on a droplet charging means. The calibration signal, which does not appreciably affect the trajectory the droplets, is also imposed onto the stream of droplets. The phase of the calibration signal is independent of the charging signal. A charge detection means and a suitable filter extract a signature signal from the charged droplets. The phase difference between the signature signal and the calibration signal is then minimized. L'invention concerne des procédés et un dispositif de régulation de la charge d'un flux de gouttelettes de fluide par la réduction au minimum de la différence de phase entre un signal d'étalonnage et son signal de signature détecté. Pour effectuer cette régulation, il convient de régler les moyens de charge de gouttelettes, les moyens de génération de gouttelettes et/ou les signaux appliqués sur les premiers ou seconds moyens. Les gouttelettes sont produites via un signal de stimulation appliqué aux moyens de production de gouttelettes, puis elles sont chargées en mode signal par un signal de charge appliqué aux moyens de charge de gouttelettes. Le signal d'étalonnage, qui n'affecte pas de manière sensible la trajectoire des gouttelettes, est également imposé au flux de gouttelettes. La phase du signal d'étalonnage est indépendante du signal de charge. Des moyens de détection de charge ainsi qu'un filtre approprié extraient des gouttelettes chargées un signal de signature.
