A hot melt adhesive system (10) includes a dispensing unit (16) configured to liquify a bulk form of hot melt adhesive and deliver the liquified hot melt adhesive to an application location. The dispensing unit (16) includes a controller (28) for establishing and/or verifying at least one system condition, such as temperatures associated with system operation. A machine reading unit (62) is coupled with the controller (28) and is capable of receiving information from a machine readable element (64) and communicating the information to the controller (28) for use in establishing and/or verifying the system condition. A method of operating the system (10) includes scanning information on at least one system condition into the controller (28) from a machine readable element (64), and using the scanned information during operation of the dispensing unit (16). Cette invention concerne un système d'adhésif thermofusible (10) comprenant une unité de distribution (16) conçue pour liquéfier une forme brute d'adhésif thermofusible et pour déverser l'adhésif thermofusible liquéfié à un emplacement d'application. Cette invention concerne également un procédé permettant de faire fonctionner le système (10), lequel procédé consiste à balayer les informations relatives à au moins un état du système dans l'unité de commande (28) à partir d'un élément lisible par machine (64) et à utiliser les informations balayées pendant le fonctionnement de l'unité de distribution (16).
