Abstract Polysaccharide alkali swellable rheology modifiers include an emulsion polymer including at least one polysaccharide portion and at least one synthetic portion wherein the at least one synthetic portion is obtained from at least one anionic ethylenically unsaturated monomer, at least one nonionic ethylenically unsaturated monomer or a combination thereof; wherein at least one of the nonionic ethylenically unsaturated monomers is a hydrophobic ethylenically unsaturated monomer, as well as methods of making polysaccharide alkali swellable rheology modifiers.
